Yes. I know. I’m about 10 years late to the Percy Jackson craze and I am oh so glad I’m finally reading this series!

Percy has been hanging out on my TBR pile for a couple of years and it seemed like I would never get to it; and so I promised myself I would fix this unholy (get it?) issue on 2015 without excuses!

And let me just say…

Percy Jackson is 12-year-old kid who has a normal life and goes to a normal school. Problem is he can’t keep himself out of trouble and gets expelled from every school he steps into. A new grade means a different school for Percy because every time something bad happens, he gets inevitably blamed for it. He thinks it’s just his bad luck though later on he learns he’s being chased by ancient Greek mythology monsters ridden by their thirst for godly blood. Shit happens and next thing Percy knows  is that he is a Half-Blood; a race of multi-talented kids with special powers who are a result of a romantic affair between humans and Greek gods.

Percy is the son of Poseidon, one of the most important members of The Olympus and now he is responsible of stopping a war between Zeus, Hades and his father, Poseidon. He will only be able to save the world with the help of his best friends, an adorable and clumsy satyr named Grover and Annabeth, daughter of Athena.

I LOVED The Lightning Thief. The pace was just the right speed and the character development was spot-on excluding some parts were Percy seemed a little too confident about his abilities. I really liked the way that Mr. Riordan introduced us to the characters; especially Grover, a crippled preteen with a slight beard and bad case of acne (Yeah, right).

I could say Grover was my favourite character of this book along with Mr. Brunner. I mean Grover IS the goat version of Ron Weasley because even though he’s clumsy and has big aspirations, at the end of the day he’s one of the bravest and most selfless characters I’ve ever read about.

Let’s talk about Clarisse though! I despised that girl with all the hatred I’m possibly able to feel. For some reason I imagined her as a majorly chubby red-haired girl with two little ponytails of curly hair at each side of her head and a permanent just-woke-up-and-it’s-Monday face. I wanted to throw the book at the wall every time she nonchalantly attacked Percy for no damn reason! Just for the record I hate her father equally if not more. (You’ll understand why when you’ve read the book)

As I read through this fantastic journey I fell in love with Rick’s writing. It’s simple but haunting; it keeps you interested and involved in the story as if the events that unravel were happening to you. The only thing I disliked is the opportunism that takes place every single time Percy gets in trouble. It’s like every time something bad happens to Percy, there’s someone magically helps him or saves him out of nowhere. I will expand on this in the second book’s review that will be up very soon! Yes. I marathoned the first two books of the series!

I did give Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief 4 out of 5 stars on my GoodReads account because:

1. The opportunism previously mentioned.
2. It felt a little short even though it’s fairly long to be a Children’s book!
3. Clarisse and goddamn Ares.
